Planet Hoto

Mental health support, and a map for getting through the world, wherever you are.

We are a nonprofit that explains mental health in plain language and helps people deal with the practical side of life: finding care, paying for it, keeping a job, keeping a home, and asking for help.

This site is for adults aged 18 and older.

Practical guides for the parts nobody explains

Feeling better often depends on boring logistics. Each guide is written in short sections, with scripts you can copy and the questions worth asking.

Finding care

Therapist, counselor, psychiatrist, peer support: what each one does, how to search, and what to say on the first call.

Guide

Paying for it

Public health systems, insurance, and charity care explained, plus sliding-scale clinics and how to ask for a lower rate.

Guide

Work and school

Asking for accommodations, taking leave, and writing the email when you can't write the email.

Guide

Housing and benefits

Where to start when stress puts rent, food, or paperwork at risk, and how to find local services that help you fill it out.

Guide

Relationships

Setting boundaries, talking to family, and supporting a friend without burning yourself out.

Guide

Reading the news about your own brain

How to judge a source, what screening tools can and cannot tell you, and why a quiz is not a diagnosis.

Guide

Avoiding Scientology

Why I hate it, how its recruiters and front groups approach you, and how to say no. A personal page.

About

What we promise

  • Plain language. If a sentence needs a dictionary, we rewrite it.
  • Sources you can check. Every guide links to where its claims come from.
  • Global, locally aware. Mental health is universal, but systems and words are not. Guides start with principles that travel and point to local services. Translations are drafts and we are improving them with native speakers.
  • No diagnosing, no scoring. We explain and point you to people who can help. We do not replace them.
  • Your information stays yours. This site does not collect or store what you tell it.
  • Equity first. Care is easier to reach for some people than others, and differs a lot between countries. Our guides say so and plan around it.
